I’m most of the way through the first short story I’ve written for about six months. More importantly, it’s the first short story I’ve written since completing the 125,000 word first draft of ‘Consorts of Heaven’ over a rather busy five months.
I was surprised, though I probably shouldn’t have been, to find myself working a lot faster than I used to: I had the idea on Tuesday, started writing on Wednesday, and now, on Thursday, I’m about three-quarters of the way through a 5,000 word story. I was also working from an unusually vague outline, which has lead to some unforeseen turns in the plot (one scene was unexpectedly hi-jacked by a cat, who may be forcibly ejected, or at least relegated to the background, in the rewrite).
Of course, speed and ease of writing is no guarantee of quality (I suspect the reverse may be true), but it’s good to find I can produce what is hopefully a viable stab at a first draft that quickly.
